Do you want to win the match or score more points than your opponent?
Does having more followers lead to having more customers? And does having more customers lead to more money?
A few days ago, I received an email from someone telling me that I should do much better on social media to get more followers. My answer was clear: I am in the B2B market, not retail, so I am looking for quality (business), not quantity (ego).
This is one of the most typical confusions in the business world and can be seen in this sequence: more followers = more customers = more profit.
It is false, not only in social media and business but also in sports.
For example, many people think that tennis is about scoring more points or games than the opponent, when in reality, what is needed is to make more sets. You can lose a match 6-0 5-7 6-7, and you will have made more sets than your opponent but lost the match.
In the same way, in business, what matters is not sales but profit. The former rewards your ego, while the latter rewards your bank account. That is why it is critical to know your ideal customer, what value you add, and what price you charge for it.
So ask yourself, do you want to make more points or win the game in your company?
