It was a strategy that never worked quite well, but it became necessary when there were few of us to play, and we didn't want to give up the fun. It's the same in business: we try to play goalkeeper-striker even though it's not something that works, beyond keeping the rhythm of the game.

It's simple. When we are a small company, we wear several caps: as a partner, CEO, CMO, CFO or COO, among others. The question, therefore, is not whether or not you wear different caps but when should you change it and when should you give it to someone else.

Specifically, there are two occasions when you should definitely do this:

  • Firstly, when you evaluate one of your roles as the other. For example, you must wear your partner cap when examining the CEO of the company: or the accountant one when you report to the CFO.
  • And secondly, when the value you contribute is lower with that cap than the one someone else better fit for it. For example, you must stop doing your own bookkeeping and delegate it immediately if you're better with customers than with numbers.

With that in mind, why don't you put all your caps on the table and analyze them individually with the goal of picking one over the next three months?
