Make innovation work

Proactive Innovation is about individual risk acceptance, environmental support, and responsiveness.

Let me share with you three quotes from Picasso, two thoughts by me and one question for you.

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” — Pablo Picasso

That’s one of most popular Picasso’s quotes, who told us about the need of a framework (and not only talent) to promote creativity. It’s what I call “Enviromental Support”, and is based on creating and nurturing room for creativity to flourish freely.

“I am only doing things I can’t do, that’s how I get to them.” — Pablo Picasso

Trust me. Creativity needs serendipity to prosper, and this is based on risk acceptance, both individual and collective (as a business value). So, please, don’t build a corset of fear and bureaucracy that stops innovation from blossoming.

“Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” — Pablo Picasso

Responsiveness is a key success factor for Creativity since it gives it purpose, and life.

It’s simple, but not easy. Balance between serendipity, methodology and orientation is what makes innovation thrive. As in the Venn’s Diagram that you can see below, Risk Acceptance, Enviromental Support and Responsiveness are directly correlated with innovation, by creating traction.

Think about it:

  • If you have Enviromental Support and Risk Acceptance, but no Responsiveness, you won’t have neither purpose nor, hence, focus.
  • But if you build Responsiveness and an effective Enviromental Support, but without accepting risk, your business won’t be disruptive enough to thrive.
  • Finally, being responsive and accepting risk, but without an environment that supports it, don’t make room for traction, so there’s no continuity.

But that’s not all, folks. Intent and action are different words for different concepts. Some people have the intention of innovating, but only those who actually do get results. So act, if you want results.

Ask yourself this question:

Are you making the most of your opportunities to create and support innovation in your company?
